Business and Culture in Barcelona (CIEE)

  • MSB students only
  • Good academic and disciplinary standing

  • Three semesters of business coursework
  • Language Prerequisites: One year of college-level Spanish or its equivalent

About the Program

CIEE’s program in Barcelona allows intermediate Spanish-speakers to study business while improving their language skills. You may take courses at the CIEE study center as well as three local universities. The Business and Culture program includes visits to local companies, internship opportunities, and cultural excursions.


CIEE Business and Culture is located in Barcelona, the capital of Spain’s Catalonia province. The CIEE Study Center is situated on Passatge Permanyer near the Plaça de Catalunya. The three local universities are located throughout the city center.

Academic Calendar

You are required to enroll in a full courseload and complete all exams and assignments associated with the course regardless of the credit you wish to receive on the program. Withdrawal from a course or failure to take/complete a final will be regarded as an unauthorized reduction in courseload and a violation of the academic policy.

A full courseload for this program is: 5 courses (as listed below)

Beginning and Intermediate Spanish Level (Up to 3 semesters of college-level Spanish or its equivalent): 1 Spanish Language Course, 1 ESCI business course in English, 1 second Business course at ESCI or CIEE, 2 electives either in business or humanities courses in English

Advanced 1 Spanish Level: 1 Spanish Language Course, 1 ESCI business course in English, 1 second Business course at ESCI or CIEE, 2 electives either in business or humanities courses. The humanities course should be taken in Spanish.

MSB students must take at least 1 humanities course as an elective.  

The minimum passing grade for this program is: 5 on the Spanish grading scale; C on the U.S. grading scale

You are required to live in program housing.

You have three housing options:
  • Homestay: breakfast and dinner included
  • Residence hall
  • Single room in a shared apartment
