In addition to your myGUABROAD application materials, you must complete the CIEE application by the OGE deadline. *If you do not meet these eligibility requirements, please meet with the OGE Regional Advisor for this program early in the process to discuss your options.

About the Program


The Development and Globalization program is located in Khon Kaen, Thailand’s fourth largest city. The northeast region is known for its beautiful temples and recreation areas, and Khon Kaen serves as a regional hub for NGOs, government, education, and many developing industries.

Academic Calendar

  • Fall: mid-August to mid-December
  • Spring: mid-January to mid-May

Fields of Study

Language of instruction is English.

Fields of study include: Economic Development, Environmental Studies, Peace & Justice Studies, Sociology, and Thai Language


You are required to enroll in a full courseload and complete all exams and assignments associated with the course regardless of the credit you wish to receive on the program. Withdrawal from a course or failure to take/complete a final will be regarded as an unauthorized reduction in courseload and a violation of the academic policy.

A full courseload for this program is: 15 credits

You will take four courses:
  • The Human Perspective on Development and the Environment
  • Directed Research Field Study/Practicum
  • Social Research Methods or Grassroots Journalism
  • Thai Language

The minimum passing grade for this program is: C

The academic program is supplemented by field trips to local development projects and excursions to areas of interest in Northeast Thailand.  

You are required to live in program housing.

You will live in off-campus housing near Khon Kaen University with a Thai roommate. When you travel to local communities, you will live with host families.

You will eat meals in campus cafeterias or local eating establishments.
